Sterling Point Review – Cosy Summer Show About Love, Discovery And Family

Amazon Prime Video has been absolutely knocking it out of the ballpark with all of its latest shows and movies. And this time, fans have been tuning in to Sterling Point. Set on a quintessential Canadian island, this show feels like a warm hug as it explores love, the importance of family, dealing with loss, and so much more.

What is Sterling Point about?

Sterling Point follows a teenager named Annie Jacobson. At seventeen-year-old, she is smart and determined student with her entire future mapped out. But her life quickly changes when she finds a collection of letters from her grandfather on her mother’s side, revealing a hidden life in Muskoka, Canada, where he owns a property.

According to his will, Annie and her twin brother, Connor Jacobson, inherit the property. Wanting to know more about her family’s past, Annie decides to leave New York and travel to the Canadian Island. She hopes to gain a closer insight into her grandparents, her family history, and her adoptive mother, who passed away when Annie was young. When Annie arrives, she quickly realises that life on the island differs completely from what she is used to. She discovers a small, tight-knit community filled with family, friendship, and people who genuinely support one another. As Annie becomes more involved in the community, she begins to learn more about the history of her family and starts to question whether her future is as certain as she once believed.

What I liked about it:

The show is very similar to any other teen drama, with a story centred around teenage life and romance. But what I loved about Sterling Point was that it wasn’t centred solely on romance. We have a love triangle in the show, but it was much more about Annie figuring herself out and learning that just because you care about someone doesn’t necessarily mean you should have a romantic relationship with them. It was like watching a realistic teenager who blurred the lines of what romantic love really is and slowly figured things out for herself.

The friendships in the show were also a strong point of the programme. We have so many different characters who share their own personal struggles and experiences. Ellis comes from an difficult upbringing, with his mother working all the time and his father hiding secrets. Romana atruggles with abandonment issues, and Oona has to raise her younger sister because of her unstable mother. These are all very realistic and eye-opening topics in Sterling Point.

The LGBTQ+ storyline centred around Ramona and Oona. Not only that, but it also showed how relationships can become complicated when it goes from friends to lovers.

What I didn’t like about it:

I was so frustrated with many of Annie’s actions and decisions throughout the show. I understand that she is inexperienced when it comes to life, having been so sheltered by her life in NYC, but sometimes she was just utterly clueless, insensitive, and annoying.

In her romances, I felt like she wanted to have her cake and eat it too. Meanwhile, she would do things to Ramona that felt like huge bombshells, and instead of giving her time to process everything, Annie would expect her to act as if everything was normal. I feel like because Ramona has been living in Sterling Point for so many years, she was jealous she missed out on it. But acting as though Ramona was responsible for everything that had happened wasn’t ok.

I do think some of Annie’s behaviour comes from jealousy, especially because Ramona is her mother’s biological child while Annie is not. I think this insecurity plays a big part in Annie’s actions and shows her immaturity throughout the show.

Overall Thoughts:

I really enjoyed Sterling Point. The setting, pacing, and characters all came together to create a dreamy summer show, but the storyline is one of its strongest suits. If you want a heartwarming and impactful show where you won’t get bored for a single minute, I’d highly recommend it.
