A Toxic Love Story Review – A Revenge Plot That Will Leave You Stunned
Netflix has been churning out a list of exciting new documentaries this month, and among the titles is A Toxic Love Story. This series is gripping and seriously hard to believe. This 1 hour and 30-minute-long film starts off with a stalking case, but that just about covers the surface of this disturbing story. It reveals abuse, control and obsession in a relationship that will leave you utterly speechless.
What is A Toxic Love Story About?
A Toxic Love Story is a Netflix true-crime documentary about a disturbing 2016 case in Anaheim, California. Michelle Hadley was in her mid-twenties when she met Ian Diaz, a former U.S. Marshal who previously worked at Disneyland. They met online, and he seemed like the man of her dreams. They eventually started dating, but during their relationship, things happened that made Michelle question whether he was the man she had fallen in love with. Another story also takes place involving Ian’s wife, Angela Connell. She claims she was injured after Michelle planted a hit on her. But with an incriminating history, is Michelle the crazy one, or was it Angela all along? And what is Ian’s role in it all? A Toxic Love Story is a seriously chilling story about the lengths people will go to for control and the sad fate that it can lead to.

Review
I’m a huge documentary fan, so naturally I was inclined to watch A Toxic Love Story. From the onset, I believed the story would be about a simple revenge plot, but the case has a lot of twisted details in it. It’s almost like you never know what’s going to happen in the next scenes, so you’re always left questioning everything. I also love how everything isn’t done in a specific chronological order. It feels like pieces of a jigsaw being put together, and it’s often up to the viewers to see if they can figure it out first. That’s what made this film very interesting to me.
The storytelling is great, as it brings in people who are close to Ian and Angela. In this case, Ian’s best friend and also Angela’s ex, bringing in people who were completely blindsided by closed ones. It’s crazy to see how two people can lie so much. Unfortunately, some of the scenes can come across a bit choppy at times. It didn’t feel like it had a natural flow to it.
Michelle’s confessional is very emotional as she reveals glimpses of her life now that the ordeal is over. It revealed how she coped with all the lies and deceptions, particularly from Ian. You could really see the relationship and it’s aftermath had an emotional impact on her. But it would’ve been good to hear from her family also. She served 5 years in prison and filed a lawsuit against the City of Anaheim and the officials involved in 2018. In April 2021, she reportedly reached a settlement with the defendants for more than £738,000 ($1 million.)
The show was fast-paced and kept me engaged throughout. Despite a few moments where the editing felt slightly disjointed, the plot twists, inerviews made this extremely enjoyable to watch. I can’t stop thinking about how mad of a case it is and I would highly recommend for anyone to watch.
