My Life with The Walter Boys Season 3 Review – Does Jackie Get Her Happily Ever After?
My Life with the Walter Boys has been airing for three seasons now, with the latest season premiering on Netflix on August 6.
This teen drama has captivated viewers, mirroring a hit like The Summer I Turned Pretty, while taking place in Colorado instead of Cousins Beach. But with the love triangle that has been at the centre of the show for so long, is it now starting to lose its touch? Let’s talk about it.
What is My Life with the Walter Boys about?
The show centres around our main character Jackie Howard, a teen struggling with the recent loss of her mother and sister. She is alone and struggling and forced to move to New York to Colorado to live with her mother’s longtime best friend. The Walter family consists of 10 boys and one girl. Jackie immediately hits it off with Alex Water, the shy and nerdy one of the Walter clan. Jackie adapts to her new life but it’s struggling to put her past behind her. She also has a forbidden crush on Alex’s bad brother Cole, and can’t help her feeling for him. Jackie is stuck between doing right, and following her heart and trying to fit in to her new family and not forgetting her old one. This show is a wholesome watch the themes of acceptance, grief and first love.
What I liked about it:
This season follows the aftermath of dad George Walter’s stroke. It’s an important storyline, bringing them closer together despite everything going on around them. Up until this point, we’ve seen a lot of the Walter family going through both highs and lows, but nothing prepared them for this. It’s an important storyline that explores the topic of health and how it can affect an entire family.
The first season primarily focused on Jackie, Alex and Cole, as well as their older sibling Will and parents George and Katherine. However, the secondary characters had the space to shine in recent episodes. We got a storyline involving Isaac and Lee and their unpredictable and unstable mother. Danny Walter and his future plans, as well as Alex and Kiley, exploring whether their friendship could become something more.
This is probably one of the more uplifting season compared to the rest. It focuses on Cole’s new found passion as well as Jackie’s future. The characters are much more mature this seasons as they figure out their lives.
What I didn’t like:
Despite having been opposed to new characters being in the show, I can confidently say this was the case in this season. I didn’t like Elliot (played by Naveen Paddock). His character was very useless. He was brought I believe to cause another conflict in Jackie’s life. A handsome face from her face but he really had no chance against Cole. And it was very predictable.
As I’ve said, I’m getting tired of the jealousy, and with another love triangle — albeit not a strong one — I feel like we’re missing out on more of Cole and Jackie actually being happy. I feel like since they got together, there have barely been any happy moments between them before doubts creep in and issues start surfacing in their relationship.
Cole is just as bad this season too. It feels like there’s barely been any growth from him since day one. He’s still self-sabotaging and being destructive in the same ways he was from the very first season. After everything he’s been through, I expected to see more development from him, but so much of his behaviour feels like he’s stuck in the same cycle. And, of course, there’s no happy ending again this season.
Overall Thoughts:
Unfortunately, I didn’t really like this season as much. Yes, it had some good moments, but they were also overshadowed by the parts that weren’t great. This show probably should have been buried already, and I’m surprised by how long it’s been going on for.
