Everyone Loves Me Review: Quirky drama where office romance and online gaming collide

I’ve started watching Chinese dramas after spending several years completely obsessed with Korean dramas. One of the main differences is the episode length, and C-dramas seem to take even longer for the main couples to get together.

Everyone Loves Me has definitely not disappointed and is one of the few Chinese dramas I’ve watched so far. After finishing this series, I felt that the workplace romance and friendships were incredibly wholesome, which made it even more enjoyable.

In this post, I’ll be delving into each element of the drama and discussing whether it’s worth watching.

What is Everyone Loves Me About?

Yue Qianling has been in love with Gu Xun for years. But when she finally confesses, he rejects her. However, neither of them realizes that they have already fallen for each other online through a video game. The series follows their journey from friendship to romance while they work in the gaming industry.

What I Liked About It:

I liked that the plot wasn’t overcomplicated. One trope in Everyone Loves Me is the miscommunication/secret identity element, but that was pretty good throughout the first half of the show. It wasn’t dragged on after that. The story starts off with a girl named Yue Qianling and her one-sided crush on Gu Xun, who goes to her university and begins working with her. He basically is the reason she doesn’t quit in the first place. She stays in her job, and things get interesting between the characters.

It’s just the right number of episodes. Everyone Loves Me consists of 24 episodes, and there wasn’t a moment when I felt the story was moving too slowly or that everything needed to be wrapped up more quickly. There weren’t any plot holes or rushed bits at the end either, so the pacing felt pretty solid throughout. Overall, it was pretty good.

Both characters have great chemistry. There were so many moments where I loved the cheeky interactions between Yue Qianling and Gu Xun. I also liked how it became an enemies-to-lovers story. She couldn’t stand him at first, but then things just worked out for them both, especially as they grew closer outside of work, too.

The two lead actors are well known for their roles in romantic dramas, so this was their perfect role. Lin Yo is particularly recognized for his roles in other romantic dramas, including Put Your Head on My Shoulder and Ski Into Love, while Zhao Lu Si has built a dedicated fanbase with her performances in both historical and modern dramas.

Apart from the romance, another main focus of the drama is the game that the two companies are developing. There’s a lot of suspense around how the game will be completed.

What I Didn’t Like About it:

Yue Qianling was a bit annoying at times. I don’t know exactly what it was about her, but she often gave girls a bad reputation. When you like a guy, it doesn’t mean you should embarrass yourself in front of him. Watching some of her actions gave me second-hand embarrassment more than once. She also seemed quite self-centred at times, as if everything had to revolve around her. While she did have some good moments, her behaviour often made it difficult for me to like her as a character.

The secondary characters didn’t get enough of a storyline, especially between Chen Xinyi and Jiang Junnan. They are characters I was rooting for. Although we did get a glimpse into their romantic storyline, it didn’t feel enough.

Overall Thoughts:

If I had to sum up this drama, I’d say it’s entertaining and silly. All the characters are pretty young and still figuring life out, which feels realistic. I love the quirky things Yue Qianling does to get Gu Xun’s attention, and vice versa. There are also some really funny moments in the drama, like when the characters get drunk and do crazy things. Plus, the secondary characters make the show fun too. Also, the songs in this are amazing.

The series has great writing and is a lighthearted and meaningful depiction of love and friendship. It features a lot of beautiful cinematography. However, the only fault I have is the fact that some cliffhangers felt unnecessary. If you’re into fun romantic dramas, Everyone Loves Me is definitely worth checking out!
