What is We Live in Time About?

Disclaimer: This part of the blog post contains minor spoilers.
At the start of the movie, we see Almut (Florence Pugh) returning home from a jog. On her way to her cozy cottage, she picks up some eggs from her hens in the garden and has a very particular way of cracking and using them.
Though this scene seems minor, it plays a significant role in how her loved ones remember her. Almut, as we come to know, is a chef, so it’s no surprise that she has a particular way in the kitchen.
Fast forward to her past, she meets her future husband, Tobias (Andrew Garfield), after accidentally running him over while he’s on his way to pick up pens to sign his divorce papers.
The pair later go on a date, and there’s a Weetabix pun due to Tobias’ role at the company.

They hit it off, and months later, they grow closer and begin discussing their future, including the possibility of having children.
In the present, we experience a tragedy in the movie.
Almut and Tobias are at their GP’s office when they receive the devastating news about Almut’s health.
The film, which is not in chronological order, takes us through the couple’s life, showing both their best and lowest moments.
It makes the movie feel incredibly raw and real. Andrew’s character is sensible and loving, while Florence’s is reckless and passionate, creating an interesting dynamic between the two.
We are given intimate glimpses into Tobias and Almut’s lives through pivotal moments, from pregnancy news to moving in together and dealing with difficult decisions.
Overall Thoughts
The portrayal feels raw and authentic. While the story primarily focuses on Florence’s diagnosis of ovarian cancer, it avoids the typical clichés of the genre, instead offering a heavier, more nuanced exploration of the emotional toll.
The movie had me in tears, no doubt. It was emotional without being overwhelming. Grounded in real life, it didn’t rely on grand gestures or gimmicks to make its narrative powerful. For fans of heartfelt films with stellar acting, We Live in Time is definitely a must-watch.
