Netflix’s Wednesday Season 2 has left some people frustrated

Although the debut season received widespread acclaim, many viewers and critics now feel the series would have been better left as a standalone.

Even with its ongoing popularity on Netflix and a solid 83 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, opinions remain sharply divided.

According to the show’s official synopsis: “While attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday Addams attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a killing spree and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago.”

A recurring theme in many negative reviews is that the second season lacks the originality of its predecessor.

One viewer stated, “They should have stopped after season 1. Remember when they tried to make a Napoleon Dynamite cartoon? That cartoon was better than this.”

Another user expressed similar frustration: “Great cast, however, incredibly boring and cliche. They just rehash the same ideas and plots from last season and don’t accomplish anything new.”

Some went even further in their criticism, calling the season “disappointing.” One individual wrote: “I’m really disappointed with this season. The show has lost its edge, predictable plotlines and weak writing have replaced the suspense and creativity that made it great. I won’t be finishing Season 2.”

Another described it as “unwatchable,” adding: “I loved season 1. Season 2 is really, really bad. It is nearly unwatchable. The writing is lazy to the point of absurdity.”

Another viewer lamented: “What happened? Everything that made the first season great is gone. Everything that was witty, clever, dark or edgy about Season 1 has been flensed away.”

A different fan noted stylistic shifts between the seasons: “I found the choice of music and Wednesday’s wardrobe in Season 2 occasionally felt out of place compared to Season 1. I also sensed a shift in Jenna Ortega’s portrayal – Wednesday seems notably different in tone.”

Further criticism pointed to lackluster writing and dialogue: “A bit disappointed with the first part of season 2. Especially in the first 2 episodes I was extremely bored. Wednesday’s dialogues seemed to me so superficial and without any depth, like her lines have been produced from an AI tool..,” one person remarked.

Another viewer simply concluded: “Season 1 was good. Season 2 is not..seems as if they needed to come out with something.”

Still, not all responses were negative. Some fans were thrilled by the new season and hopeful for what’s to come. One enthusiastic viewer shared: “Season 2 is so freaking amazing and ICONIC! ! ! Super excited even more for the rest of the season!!!” Another added:

“Huge improvement on Season 1, much more aligned with the Addams Family universe with plenty of references to previous Addams films and series.”

One critic offered particular praise for the lead: “Jenna Ortega again delivers a spellbinding performance as Nevermore Academy’s Sherlock Holmes.”
