So you’ve seen My Life with the Walter Boys?
Based on the book by Huntley Fitzpatrick, this Netflix series follows Jackie Howard, a girl who moves from the hustle and bustle of a big city to the quiet, tight-knit town of Colorado, where she finds herself living with a chaotic family of teenage boys.
The main cast of My Life with the Walter Boys Season 1 includes Nikki Rodriguez as Jackie Howard, Noah LaLonde as Cole Walter, Ashby Gentry as Alex Walter, Johnny Link as Will Walter, Corey Fogelmanis as Nathan Walter, Connor Stanhope as Danny Walter, Zoë Soul as Hayley Young, Jaylan Evans as Skylar, Sarah Rafferty as Dr. Katherine Walter, and Marc Blucas as George Walter.
When we meet Jackie in episode 1, she’s a shy, uncertain girl with big dreams of getting into Princeton – and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. However, as the series progresses, Jackie begins to open up to her friends, find peace in the simple joys of life (like organising a ranch wedding or enjoying her first lake party), and, slowly but surely, becomes more comfortable in this new, unexpected chapter of her life. No longer is she isolated in her own little world; she starts to embrace the new connections and experiences that come with it.
Although Jackie begins to find her place in this new life, she can’t help but think about the life she left behind. There’s a sense of longing for her old world, and the pull of the past lingers.
Romances in My Life With The Walter Boys
Jackie’s love life gets even messier. She starts dating Alex but can’t ignore her chemistry with Cole. They spend more time together, even when she doesn’t want to. Alex begins as a quiet, thoughtful fan favorite. However, some viewers question his clinginess and ultimatums toward Jackie.
Meanwhile, Cole, the jock and bad boy of the family, is rough around the edges but has a surprisingly soft side for Jackie. But is he really genuine, or is he just after what he wants, ready to toss her aside as he has with his other casual relationships?
Poor Character Development
The show also introduces a host of other characters who add their own dynamics to the story. Take Isaac for example, he starts by seeming charming and is given a small storyline that, sadly, fizzles out in later episodes.
Another short-lived character arc is Danny’s. He’s quiet, loves theater and movies, and is easy to sympathise with. We learn he stays up late watching films, especially when Cole has girls over. There’s hope for a romance between him and Erin, a hinted subplot. Fans are eager for producers to pick this up in Season 2.
There’s also the intriguing possibility that Cole and Alex might follow Jackie to New York after she spontaneously leaves—something fans are already theorising.
And then there’s the matter of Alex’s obliviousness to Kiley. Honestly, that needs to be explored further. The show would benefit from a childhood friends-to-lovers storyline that seems almost too perfect to ignore.
Overall Feelings Towards My Life With The Walter Boys
Overall, My Life with the Walter Boys is a sweet, feel-good story about love, friendship, and finding happiness in unexpected places. Sure, it follows some familiar tropes—you only need to look at The Summer I Turned Pretty to see the similarities—but it still stands out on its own. There are so many moments that will make you laugh, cringe, and feel frustrated with the characters, but there’s also an undeniable warmth in the way it celebrates family. The series may be predictable at times, but it’s still a journey worth taking. Here’s hoping Season 2 will take it even further.
