I had an absolute blast watching this movie.

Freakier Friday is the exciting sequel to Freaky Friday, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. But after returning to screens over a decade later, was it worth the wait? Click here for more of my movie reviews.

Feakier Friday review
Freakier Friday is a gem of a movie

What is Freakier Friday about?

Freakier Friday follows a grown-up Anna Coleman (Lohan), who is now a parent and has given up the stage to pursue a behind-the-scenes music career. Meanwhile, her mother, Tess, is a psychiatrist and podcaster who helps raise Anna’s angsty teenage daughter, Harper.

Harper doesn’t get along with her new classmate, British immigrant Lily Reyes, due to her snobbish personality – especially now that her mum has taken an interest in Lily’s dad.

Freakier Friday Review

Here we have a blended family situation where everyone is unhappy. There’s a lot of chaos as Anna tries her hardest to parent Harper while also following her heart – but things aren’t easy.

When it was first announced that they were making Freakier Friday, I didn’t see the point. But of course, I was a huge fan of the original film when it aired back in 2003.

If you’re anything like me, you love a trip down nostalgia lane. Going into this movie, I wasn’t sure if the body-swapping element would stay the same, with Anna and Tess living each other’s lives in each other’s bodies – but there was a great twist this time around.

Freakier Friday review
Freakier Friday is absolutely hilarious!

The return of the original cast was something we’d all been waiting for, like Chad Michael Murray and Stephen Tobolowsky. And Jamie Lee Curtis as Tess is hilarious – especially the jokes about her now being much older.

The newest faces were also exceptional. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Ella, a singer, who Anna is working with. Julia Butters perfectly captures the chaotic teen angst that a young Anna once had. We also get Disney Unwrapped star Sophia Hammons and Manuel Luis Jacinto, whose British accents truly steal the show.

The film was fun and packed with meaningful messages about loving people despite their differences, and it explored the complicated mother-daughter relationship in a way that felt like a heartfelt therapy session. It felt just like a classic, enchanting Disney film that hadn’t lost its values.

The film caters to a wide range of audiences: children, families, and women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and even 60s. You can rewatch it and feel the magic all over again.

Given that I had watched the film during my teens – when many of was too broke to view it on the big screen – it felt like a homage to my youth and I felt privileged to delve back into this universe once again.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack—especially hearing Lindsay Lohan sing her new song Baby, and Christina Vidal Mitchell showcasing her incredible vocals in You Take Me Away. I can’t stop listening!
