Netflix has a brand-new obsession in the form of the TV series Hostage. This new political drama dropped on the platform on 21 August and has viewers hooked.

The five-part limited series stars none other than Suranne Jones, best known for her roles in Doctor Foster and Vigil. She steps into the role of Prime Minister Abigail Dalton. The plot revolves around her husband being kidnapped just as she welcomes the French President, played by Julie Delpy.

Since its premiere, Hostage has soared straight to the top of Netflix’s UK Top 10, even surpassing streaming juggernauts like Love Is Blind: UK and the ever-popular Wednesday.

It’s not just the fans who are raving. Hostage currently boasts an impressive 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 30+ reviews.

Industry insiders are calling it one of the dramas of the year. Meanwhile, fans are dubbing it the best series since Adolescence.

One critic raved, “Hostage sets the bonkers bar impressively high.”

Another chimed in, “With shocking twists coming thick and fast, and solid performances, Matt Charman delivers a reasonably bingeable mini-series.”

A third person said, “Hostage is a solid political thriller made better by the performances of Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy, especially when they’re on screen together.

“This one feels like ten episodes crammed into five, and I mean that as a compliment: it goes, goes, goes, and never lets up until it’s over. It’s a rarity — a five-episode series that not only shouldn’t be a movie, but actually feels like one, “ a fourth critic added.

A fifth said, “Hostage is the rare Netflix show that doesn’t outstay its welcome. A solid binge for viewers who like their thrillers lean, entertaining, and somewhat vacuous.”

Suranne Jones has been praised in her role as PM Abigail Dalton; she’s steely, sensitive, and utterly captivating to watch. Viewers are praising her portrayal of a modern leader under impossible pressure.

Meanwhile, Julie Delpy does a brilliant job in the series as French President Vivienne Toussaint.

The chemistry between the two leading ladies is impeccable.

It’s not just Suranne and Julie who have stood out i the spotlight. The series also stars Ashley Thomas as the kidnapped husband, as well as Lucian Msamati, James Cosmo, and Queen Charlotte breakout star Corey Mylchreest.

The show was designed as a limited series, but fans are already begging for more. Creator Matt Charman has hinted that there could be more story to tell—particularly around Abigail Dalton’s family and the wider political fallout.

Netflix hasn’t made anything official just yet, but if fan reactions are anything to go by, a second season may well be in the cards.
