Who is Taron Egerton?

Taron Egerton rose to fame playing Gary “Eggsy” Unwin in Kingsman: The Secret Service, starring alongside Colin Firth.

He gained critical acclaim for portraying Elton John in Rocketman. Born in Birkenhead, England, in 1989, Egerton took acting seriously. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 2012.

Although originally from England, Taron proudly identifies as Welsh and is fluent in both Welsh and English.

He began his career in theatre with a performance in the play The Last of the Haussmans at the National Theatre in London in 2012.

The actor also appeared in the crime drama series Lewis before making his breakthrough in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), directed by Matthew Vaughn.

The film, set in a secret spy organization called the Kingsman, featured Colin Firth as Harry Hart, who recruits Eggsy, in debt to his late father, into the agency for a dangerous mission. The success of the first film led to a sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), further solidifying Egerton’s status as a rising star.

In addition to his Kingsman success, Taron Egerton also starred in the crime film Legend (2015), portraying Teddy Smith.

Not only that but he took a lead role in Eddie the Eagle (2016), where he played the role of Michael “Eddie” Edwards, the underdog British ski jumper, earning widespread praise for his heartfelt and comedic performance. He also had a lead role in the Netflix show Carry-On.

However the star’s breakthrough role as Elton John in Rocketman (2019) and became one of Hollywood’s top actors.

His portrayal of Elton John earned him numerous awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The actor is not married. However, he has been linked to dating the likes of Emily Thomas and Chloe Bennet.

Impressively the Hollywood actor took piano lessons for his role in the movie and performed live vocals in every scene during shooting.

In a previous interview, Taron admitted his goal wasn’t to imitate Elton John exactly but to capture key traits, like his changing voice. He reflected on the singer’s accent, which shifted from North London to more American over time, partly due to his long-term relationship with a Canadian.

This led him to imitate Elton’s voice change, along with physical changes, to show Elton’s evolution throughout the years.

“If you listen to Elton in his first interviews, he sounds like a North Londoner, but now he’s nearer to sounding like an American and partly that’s because he’s been with a Canadian [David Furnish] for 25 years.

“So that was quite a nice little way of tracking where I was, because I started playing him as he was in 1960-something all the way through to about 1990. It’s a long time. And the voice is quite a useful way, along with losing his hair, of tracking where you’re at.”

Egerton also went on to admit he felt nervous about playing a gay character as a heterosexual actor.

He told the publication: “The thing I was nervous of… There’s a certain amount of trepidation around playing a gay character when you’re a heterosexual. Because you don’t want that community to feel you’re doing some sort of caricature or something.”
