When it comes to winding down and letting the sandman do his thing, some movies are just better at lulling us to sleep than others. 

In a study, Fantastic Mr. Fox has officially been crowned the number one movie to fall asleep to, according to the Letterboxd community.

But that’s not all – Studio Ghibli’s classics also made top on the list, proving once again that animated magic knows no bounds when it comes to relaxation.

So, what exactly makes these films so sleep-inducing?

According to experts at Bed Kingdom, they turned to the online film cataloguing service Letterboxd, where they analyzed over 1,700 user-generated lists that featured sleep-centric terms like “fall asleep to,” “bedtime,” and “unwind.” 

These cinematic gems really know how to send us straight to the Land of Nod. And we have to say – the results are pure cozy bliss.

Taking the top spot as the most popular film to fall asleep to was Fantastic Mr. Fox, with the movie featuring on 109 sleep-related lists. 

Adapted from the cherished Roald Dahl novel, the movie combines Wes Anderson’s signature deadpan humour, distinctive stop-motion animation visuals, and a whimsical score, establishing it as the perfect film for both children and adults to fall asleep to. 

In second place was My Neighbor Totoro, which appeared on 108 sleep-related lists in total.

The Studio Ghibli animation depicts two young girls as they befriend magical wood spirits in postwar rural Japan. 

Accompanied by a gentle score by Joe Hisaishi, the film’s slow slice-of-life storytelling makes it ideal for dozing off to.  

Following in third was another Studio Ghibli film, Spirited Away, with appearances on 107 sleep-related lists.  

Often considered Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece, the film portrays young girl Chihiro on a quest to reunite with her parents after she inadvertently enters a spirit world upon moving to a new neighbourhood.  

Coming in fourth was Greta Gerwig’s 2019 Little Women adaptation, which was included on a total of 98 lists.  

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, the period drama tells the story of four sisters and their lives during the American Civil War – but not without a modern twist, allowing the film to appeal to both younger and older audiences.  

Rounding out the top five was the first of the Before trilogy, Before Sunrise. It is featured on 94 lists, making it a popular choice for falling asleep to. 

The movie chronicles two people who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna where they spend the night together before going their separate ways. 

The film is a relaxing watch, with its intimate dialogue creating a serene and quiet atmosphere.

In sixth place was coming-of-age drama Call Me by Your Name which placed on 92 sleep-related lists overall.

The film stars Timothée Chalamet as 17-year-old Elio, who falls in love with 24-year-old graduate student Oliver after he stays in his Lombardy home over the summer.

The film is particularly notable for its picturesque rural Italian scenery and tranquil soundtrack.

Following in seventh place was the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, featuring on 84 sleep-related lists.

One of the most popular adaptations of Jane Austen’s iconic romance, the dreamy period drama stars Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy – two of the most beloved characters in literature history.

Coming in eighth was a third Studio Ghibli film, Howl’s Moving Castle, with appearances on 83 lists.

The 2004 film is set in a fantastical steampunk-inspired kingdom in which protagonist Sophie is turned into an elderly woman after being cursed by a witch.
